Two years ago we established a community garden at the school. Last year we started keeping rabbits, learned some basics of trapping fur bearing animals and started a simple garden at home. This year we created a little "barn" out of half of our garage and added chickens in with the rabbits. And when I say "this year" I mean YESTERDAY. And on the very first day of the year we started off with our very first egg. What a great way to begin.
We are taking small steps toward a more sustainable and self sufficient lifestyle. We are moving slowly, but we are moving. If I had to list some goals for this year, I would include the following
1. More effectively manage our home "kitchen" garden
*add more vegetables that Mae uses regularly
*use multiple rotations per plot
*add another raised bed or two
*go VERTICAL. The bush style tomatoes just didn't quite do it for me so I would like aim higher
2. Establish a honey bee colony!
* I really like the idea of top-bar hives and am starting to plan a build in the next month or two
*It would be VERY helpful to find someone who already knew what they were doing or take a course
3. Buy a fruit tree. We don't expect to live here forever so there is no sense in starting an orchard HERE - unless you can also take it with you. I have been reading about the 4-in-one dwarf apple tree that can be grown in a pot. Would be great to get one started so that when the time comes that we do move, the tree is both mature enough to fruit and portable enough to go with us!
I could go on but, the MAIN goal underlying each of the individual ones listed above is to consistently, in small but tangible ways, move FORWARD.
