So why white for us? So why Calis and NZs and why white? Both Calis and NZs are good meat breeds. They grow quickly, have a good meat to bone ratio and don't eat too much. The white color makes them acceptable to processing plants, restaurants and farmer's markets. Nothing says "yuck" as much as a visible hair on somebody's freshly bought dinner. (White hair is VERY difficult to see on the light meat.)
Furthermore, when you breed an NZ buck to a Cali doe, you get GREAT offspring. The hybrid vigor is really strong with these crosses and you get even faster growing, well shaped animals.
The final reason for us was that the market was not saturated here in Lincoln. There just were not that many people growing quality NZs and Calis in our area.
I don't know what the perfect breed is for YOU, but for us the factors mentioned above all came together to make the choice quite simple. Besides, I think the black points on Calis are cute!
